Veteran Nollywood actor and movie director, Ugezu J Ugezu is always known for his outspoken nature, especially on sensitive issues and topics. Well, he has once again waded into another matter, asking why Nigerians are still needing Visas to enter the United Kingdom, UK.
“I am still wondering why we should get a Visa to visit the UK,” he commented.
Mr. Ugezu was reacting to viral video released by the controversial Nigerian musician, Portable, after the United Kingdom embassy in the country denied his visa, while his own visa was easily approved. So Portable who had insisted that his wife must come with him to the UK over the period he will be spending in the country for his lined up music concerts.
Though the senior Nollywood personality did not give reasons for his comment, but many people who have been reacting to the comment have given the reason as being the fact that UK is Nigeria’s colonial master, as such, free Visa entry into their country should be one of the benefits we enjoy for being a British colony.
The comment from the veteran Nollywood movie director has expectedly attracted mixed reactions from other concerned Nigerians. See some of the comments and reactions captured below…
Meanwhile, prior to September 1986, Nigerians who wished to travel to the United Kingdom, UK, do not need any form of Visa for that. From September 1986, that was that privilege ended when Margaret Thatcher’s administration decided to end free Visa entry into UK from certain countries, at the end of a cabinet meeting.
Countries affected by that decision includes Nigeria, Ghana, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, as their citizens need to obtain UK entry Visas in their respective countries before traveling to UK. And that law has remained effective for Nigerians going to UK till date, and unfortunately, it has even become stricter for Nigerians to acquire UK visa in recent times.
