UCL: Why The Ref Disasllowed Bayern Munich Late Goal + Why The Ref Refused To Consult VAR As Well.

It was such a chaotic ending last night in Santiago Bernabeu during the second leg of the UEFA champions league semi finals between Real Madrid vs Bayern Munich...

While Bayern led by one goal through Davies at the closing stages of the tension soaked game, Real on the other hand equalized and scored the winning goal few minutes later through Joselu.

Unfortunately, a late equalizing goal was scored by Bayern’s De Light at 90 minutes plus, but was disasllowed by the officiating referee. That decision sparked a massive protest inside the field, especially amongst Bayern Munich players and head coach, Thomas Tuchel. Regardless, the Ref’s decision stood.

Now, there have been massive global reactions to the incident. But unfortunately many people are approaching the matter with so much emotions, hence denying them the chance to understand the true situation of things.

First of all, many experts have actually admitted that the offside call was a wrong call, and also that both the linesman and center referee made mistake in that process. Of which include the fact that in such tight situation, that the linesman and referee should have allowed play to continue, since it will still be subjected to a check and scrutiny by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).

But unfortunately, the linesman raised his flag hastily, and the ref instead of allowing play to continue blew his whistle as well.

The Main Controversy…

Now, understand the fact that goal scored was not a goal because the ref had in error blown the whistle, meaning “STOP” the play. Which promoted Real Madrid players to actually stop playing, while their opponent continued.

In that case, whatever you are doing after the officiating referee’s whistle had gone will actually not count. In football, you are under the authority and control of the referee’s whistle, and everything you are doing inside that pitch is still for the aforementioned.

So, that goal is not a goal, as long as the Ref’s whistle had gone several seconds before the equalizing goal.

Recall that in March 2024, a similar situation happened between Real Madrid vs Valencia in a la Liga game. While the game was 2:2, then Jude Bellingham headed in a late winner, but unfortunately the referee had already blown the final whistle just like in this case as well.

Real Madrid members in the field and those in the pitch protested to the high heavens, to the extent Jude Bellingham was given a red card in the process. But the referee stood his ground because the whistle had gone before the goal.

VAR DECISION:

I have seen many people questioning why the disallowed goal wasn’t subjected to VAR check. Well, that’s just being too emotional because there’s nothing to check in that situation.

Where VAR would have been called to action was actually if the ref has not blown his whistle. But as long as the whistle had gone before the goal, then VAR has no job to do there.

It’s sad that many people won’t accept this submission but that’s just the truth here. Your opponent stopped play because they heard the whistle from the officiating referee, while you continued and scored, then on whose authority did you continued the play?

While the situation is painful, but it’s an error on the side of both the referee and linesman, for only not allowing play to continue and later subject whatever outcome from it to a VAR check. Aside that, there’s no way that goal should have stood.
