With the growing rate of divorce in many marriages in recent years, one is left with thoughts of what’s actually going on? Is that marriage is no longer attractive and fashionable? In fact, many people have continued to express fears of going into marriage as a result of the rate of divorces across all board.
Well, with the recent story of the crack in the marriage of ace comedian, actor, filmmaker and entertainer, AY Makun, otherwise known as Comedian AY and wife, Mabel after about twenty years together, we have decided to look at some of the recent divorces that many people never believed will ever happen. Mostly because of the social status and personalities of those involved.
Chris and Anita Oyakhilome: When the news of the crack in their seemingly near perfect marriage broke out, most people actually find it so hard to believe that such will ever end up being a reality.
The lovebirds who met in the 80s, at a time Anita was a university student while Chris was serving as a pastor of the Believers Loveworld Campus Fellowship. Then in 1991, they officially got married, and their marriage blessed with two beautiful children.
Sadly, in 2014 they announced their separation after irreconcilable differences, and in 2016 they finalized their divorce through the Court. This were partners who almost grew up together, worked together to achieve their success, but all that bond and ties couldn’t save their beautiful marriage.
Bill And Melinda Gates: This was another divorce story that shocked the world as practically no one expected such, especially looking at how they have never been associated with any sorts of marital scandals throughout their 27 years of marriage.
Well, as they say, that all that glitters is not gold, their marriage and subsequent divorce further validated that aphorism. And in May 2021, the couple announced their separation, they promised to continue working together as business partners.
BasketMouth And Elsie: Another divorce that surprised and left many speechless. Yes, their marriage was built with so much glitz and glamour, that they became the envy of many intending couples, or those whose marriages were expressing challenges.
Besides, these were two people who have been dating for a long time before their marriage, but that wasn’t enough to save their marriage. Married in November 2010, the veteran Nigerian comedian and actor announced their separation in December 2022 after about 12 years of being married together. Their marriage is blessed with three children.
Ireti And Patrick Doyle: Yet another sad divorce witnessed in recent times, as for fans of Nollywood, as the lovebirds were amongst fans most favorites in the movie industry.
The couple who got married in 2004 and lived happily together all these years, with many people actually envying their seemingly beautiful marriage.
Unfortunately, the actress, Ireti Doyle announced during an interview with Chude, that she and Patrick Doyle are divorced, that was in January 2023, with four children together.
Israel DMW And Sheila Courage: They had one of the most beautiful wedding ceremonies around, with lots of celebrities and personalities in attendance, unfortunately, their marriage was short-lived and experienced one of the most bitter divorce stories ever.
They got married in October 2022 and divorced in November 2023, after series of accusations, counter accusations and irreconcilable differences. Frankly, it was one divorce that shocked many people, especially Nigerians as nobody actually saw that coming.
Their marriage did not produce any child.
Sullivan Chime And Clara Chime: The former governor of Enugu state had during his tenure married a certain lady named Clara (Chime) Igwe, in October 2008, who later became the First Lady during his tenure.
Being his second marriage after he had earlier divorced his first wife from Udi in Enugu state, then Sahara Reporters reported that the Governor started romance affairs with Clara’s younger sister, Ebere Igwe. Things got so messy that it was reported that the Governor got the wife’s younger sister pregnant in the process, and she later gave birth to a baby boy for the Ex Governor.
While the battle rages, things got so bad and expectedly, divorce set in. The couple had one of the worse and most humiliating divorce stories ever. After 11 years, their marriage ended, though she has since remarried.
Chioma Chukwuka: Her rumoured divorce is definitely one that has continued to surprise a lot of people till date. Yes, she was one celebrity who many people respects a lot, especially as she conducts herself and life, no unnecessary scandals that usually trails most celebrities.
But sadly, people were shocked to learn that she has since face same knife of divorced like some of her colleagues, as reported by several media houses, and equally confirmed indirectly by veteran actor, Chief Pete Edochie, during one of his interviews in 2023.
Chioma was married for fifteen years to one Frankly Akpotha, they got married in 2006, and rumoured to have divorced in 2022. Even in some of her recent interviews and social media posts, she refers to herself as a single mum, while she has equally reverted to her maiden name.
Paul Okoye (Rudeboy) And Anita Okoye: One of the most admired couples in this part of the world, but things didn’t turn out as most people had expected. No one actually saw their divorce coming at the time it happened.
They got married in 2014, but she decided to walk away from the marriage, citing some serious factors like cheating, fraud, separation and few others. While she filed for separation at a Federal High Court in Abuja, the court granted her request by dissolving their eight year old marriage in December 2022.
Korra And Dean: The couple were so full of life and fun across social media platforms, that most people had actually wished there were in their marital shoes. They actually painted practically, what you would refer to as a “perfect marriage”.
Well, they ended up with one of the most bitter divorce tales in recent times following the crash of their marriage in March 2022, after they got married in 2018, and had two kids together.
Without mincing words, no one would have actually believed that the couple will end up the way they did, considering how they were all over each other when they going was sweet and beautiful. Their marriage was a hot topic on social media platforms as millions of people envied them.
Funke Akindele And JJC Skillz: Their divorce really pained a lot of us, because we thought that Funke has finally found a man befitting for her life. That was after her ill-fated marriage with her first hubby, Mr. Oloyede in May 2012, which crashed the following year, precisely July 2013, over irreconcilable differences.
She got married to Nigerian rapper, JJC Skillz in London, that was in May 2016. And when they welcomed a set of twin boys in December 2018, it was celebrated massively across social media platforms and otherwise, once again proving her much the couple were loved by people.
Unfortunately, she was subjected to same experience like her first marriage, as JJC Skillz announced their separation in June 2022.
Note: Regardless of the outcome of other people’s marriage, marriage is still a very beautiful experience, especially when you find your true missing ribs.
