The Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC) has finally apprehended all the suspects allegedly involved in a case of Sextortion and Romance scam.
This was made known by a statement released by the Nigeria Police, through the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters Abuja, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, which equally revealed the suspects to be Abodunrin Rasheed, Abodunrin Tunde, and Abodunrin Rokeeb, all male.
According to the statement, they were arrested following a report via the NPF-NCCC E-Reporting portal and an intelligence report from the Center as well, with further investigation unmasking the criminal activities of the suspects.
They were alleged to have met a certain Croatian national on a dating app and they disguised as women, to further exploit their unsuspecting victim(s). From the dating App, their chats progressed to both Instagram and Whatsapp, leading to an intimate relationship.
With the intention of blackmailing the Croatian man, they deceived him into sending his nudes, while they sent nudes to him as well, but what they sent to him wasn’t their real self.
And afterwards, they started threatening to share the nude online, including sending them to his friends and family members, except he pay the money they demanded from him.
Along the line, the matter got to the table of the operatives of the NPF-NCCC, who followed the case. They reportedly conducted a thorough investigation into the matter, hence leading to the obtaining of some vital information that helped in the arrest of the suspects.
Items recovered from them include six iPhones, one Techno phone, one Samsung phone, and a Lexus car. And further probe into their activities revealed that they have previously engaged in numerous similar cyber crimes, and in the process defrauded a lot of victims, both individually and collectively.
The statement further revealed that they equally receive gift cards from their victims, through platforms like steam gift cards, iTunes gift cards, etc.
The suspects will soon be charged to court upon the completion of investigation by NPF-NCCC. And in the same way, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun PhD. NPM has warned Nigerians to be careful of the kind of online transactions they are getting involved to avoid falling into the traps of these online/cyber criminals.
