It is no longer news that organizers of the globally renowned Grammy Awards has released nominations for the 2024 awards, and Nigerian musician had a fair representation on the nominees list. For instance, Grammy winner, Burna Boy has four nominations, Davido has three nominations, Ayra Starr, Asake, Olamide, all made the nominees list.
But the attention of our eagle eyes have been drawn to the fact that both Davido and Burna Boy share space in two nominations; Burna Boy’s album titled “I Told Them” and Davido’s “Timeless” album got nominations for Best Global Music Album, and on the other hand, Burna Boy’s “Alone” and Davido’s “Feel” equally got nominated for Best Global Music Performance.
Without being told, we know how fanatic many people in this part of the world can be when it comes to issues concerning their favourite celebrity/celebrities, public figure, etc. Do you need to be told about how much they fight across social media platforms on the same matter. You could even see a father and his son fighting each other on social media space just because of their respective affiliations with celebrities, especially musicians and footballers.
Meanwhile, the social media space has already started witnessing massive bantering amongst fans of both Davido and Burna Boy, including many of them making unsavoury comments against each other’s camp. In less than twenty four hours following the release of the nominations list, the Twitter space has witnessed unending fighting, bantering, use of all sorts of unprintable words, etc, against each other.
And looking at the fact that Davido is only getting his debut nominations for the Grammy Awards, his fans, who called themselves “30 Billion Gang (30BG)”, will surely go all out to attack anything affiliated to Davido’s rival. Just like we have started saying, many of Davido fans and followers have been more vocal online in the past few hours, attacking and berating Burna’s camp, especially on the ground that Davido’s album is way ahead of Burna Boy’s (based on their own assessment, in the spirit of refusing to play second fiddle in this game of supremacy).
Meanwhile, it is a known fact that over the years, it has been a hot battle of supremacy among some of the A-list music stars in the country, as to who should be crowned the best and biggest artist in Nigeria, for the present crop of musicians in the country. So, this alone is one of the major factor why there’s always this hot squabble amongst them, so, this is not an exception as well.
TaKe a glimpse at some of the comments and reactions from their fans…
Meanwhile, this whole social media drama won’t stop with regards to this Grammy Awards stuff, at least for now, then expect it to get over heated few days to the award ceremony, most especially in the night of that day.
But be that as it may, the respective camps should know that in the end, it is Nigeria that won. Therefore, we all should exercise caution and restraint, particularly with with the kind of words we vomit.
