Three black identified as Xavier Veal Alvin Jackson and Emmanuel Jean Joseph has filed for a racial discrimination lawsuit against American airlines. The three victims of racial discrimination approached the court today, May 30, 2024.
The incident leading up to the lawsuit occured on January 5, 2024, when they were allegedly evicted from an American flight heading from Phoenix in Arizona to New York. They were said to have been accused of possessing offensive body odour, which they believed was just a pretext for the racial discrimination unjustly meted out to them.
Meanwhile according to BBC, these three black were not even seated together during the said incident and neither did they know each other, but were evicted from the said flight following a complaint of body odour in the flight by a certain passenger in the flight, whose identity is not yet released. This was why the victims believe that the incident was clearly racially motivated, especially since it’s only the blacks in the flight seated at different positions that were targeted.
Meanwhile, the same men had earlier boarded a flight from Los Angeles earlier that day without any issues whatsoever, until it got to the flight at phoenix. They were reportedly approached by one of the flight’s attendant, and asked to get off the flight.
They were still outside when the pilot announced to the other passengers inside the flight that the delay was as a result of a case of body odour. Though were later readmitted into the flight after the public embarrassment and humiliations.
The Public Citizen, being the advocacy group representing the plaintiffs (victims), has called for a thorough investigation into the matter, while also revealing the amount of emotional and psychological distress the victims suffered throughout the the men experienced as a result of this incident.
